The Common Core of Skills and Knowledge is a set of principles and values that outline the basic skills and knowledge needed to work with children, young people, and families.
The Common Core of Skills and Knowledge includes the following areas:
- Effective communication: How to engage with children, young people, and families
- Child development: How to support the development of children and young people
- Safeguarding: How to promote the welfare of children
- Supporting transitions: How to support children and young people through transitions
- Multi-agency working: How to work with other agencies
- Sharing information: How to share information.
Who is it suitable for?
The course is suitable for nannies, child-minders, au pairs and nursery staff wishing to register on the voluntary part of the Ofsted Childcare Register.
You do not need to have previous experience or qualifications in working with children to undertake this qualification.
What are the entry requirements?
Learners must be aged 16 or over. Must have a good level of English as the course is delivered in English.

What related qualifications can you progress to?
This qualification allows progression on to the Level 3 Early Years Educator qualifications and other relevant Level 3 qualifications relating to early years and child care.
Which type of job roles can you apply for on completion?
This qualification allows a learner to count towards the Level 2 ratio as a qualified Level 2 Early Years Practitioner across the Early Years Workforce.
Learners may work under supervision in a variety of roles such as:
- Au pairs
- Nannies
- Childminders
- nursery practitioner
- classroom assistant
